ZSI - Centre for Social Innovation

Type of Organisation: Research

The Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI) is a trans-disciplinary social science research institute, founded as a registered non-profit organisation in 1990. The head office is located in Vienna, Austria. It employs around 55 persons, most of them researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds, working mainly in inter-disciplinary research fields and on projects. ZSI operations are subdivided into three departments: 1) Work and Equal Opportunities, 2) Technology and Knowledge and 3) Research Policy and Development.

The unit for Research Policy and Development (responsible for SUSTAIN EU-ASEAN) works on several nationally and internationally funded projects. Its core competencies comprise S&T policy dialogue facilitation, the analysis and the practical improvement of RTDI systems and innovation policy and social-scientific studies for STI policy-making (such as research on patterns of techno-globalisation, co-publication analysis, foresight, RTDI evaluation and comparative analysis of STI policies).

ZSI is actively involved in ERA-WATCH as a member responsible for the Austrian profiles. ZSI also works with other funding institutions (World Bank, UNDP, Structural funds, IPA funds, etc.) and its staff act as experts for the Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (READI) or the Expert Advisory Group of the European Commission on RTDI Internationalisation.
