Deliverable 1.1 Report on EU-ASEAN research cooperation in the area of climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials

This paper describes current research cooperation activities between Europe and Southeast Asia in the areas of climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials. This first report focuses on projects with existing links to Southeast Asia and as such aims to create a solid basis for the creation of future opportunities and provides a network for European projects aiming to initiate new cooperation with ASEAN partners.

This paper identifies previous and on-going research cooperation activities between Europe and Southeast Asia with a particular focus on the following areas:

Climate action
• Mitigation with a focus on smart cities and energy efficiency
• Marine environment
• Water and biodiversity
• Climate change adaptation
• Earth observation


Resource efficiency and raw materials
• Supply and efficient use of non-energy, non-agricultural raw materials
• Circular economy
• Recycling, waste

In doing so, this report shows EU funded climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials projects relevant for the ASEAN, but with no existing links and focus to the ASEAN region, EU funded projects with ASEAN participation and bilateral projects between selected European and ASEAN countries. It maps their work and results with regard to the thematic fields relevant to this call. The goal of this report is to get an in-depth understanding of their objectives, level of stakeholder and user engagement as well as results.
